Shinagawa, 36 Views of Famous Places in Tokyo - Ikkei, 1872

Shinagawa, 36 Views of Famous Places in Tokyo - Ikkei, 1872

$99.00

This print is from Ikkei's series 36 Views of Famous Places in Tokyo, a parody of the series 100 Famous Views of Edo by Hiroshige. Instead of an image of small human figures dotting serene, sweeping landscapes, we instead see only a small sliver of a peaceful nature scene -- in the background, through a window. The people are, instead, our focal point... and they are anything but serene: a drunk man falls down the stairs, accidentally kicking a woman in the face, who in turn bumps into her child.

An excellent comedic look at Shinagawa as it was in the Meiji Era. It's still a bustling area in Tokyo today!

Artist - Ikkei (active early 1870s)

Image Size - Oban, approximately 14 1/2" x 9 1/2"

Condition - Nice color and detail. Rubbing and staining throughout. Tiny hole near top edge. Please see photos for details.
