Plum Garden at Kameido - Ikkei, 1871-1872

Plum Garden at Kameido - Ikkei, 1871-1872

$99.99

From the series 36 Views of Famous Places in Tokyo, which parodies Hiroshige's 100 Famous Views of Edo. This comedic print expertly pokes fun at Hiroshige's print of the same name (sometimes translated instead as "Plum Estate at Kameido"), depicting the same real-life location. Interestingly, Vincent Van Goh made his own version that work, "Flowering Plum Tree (after Hiroshige)."

Whereas Hiroshige's print shows a serene view of the garden, this print relegates that view to the background -- instead focusing on a comic, chaotic scene of people falling down. Note also the lines in the background that reference a technique sometimes used various Famous Places series: evoking the silhouette of Mt. Fuji with objects.
