Pickup currently not available
This print is from one of the most famous and sought-after ukiyo-e series -- New Forms of Thirty-Six Ghosts. It depicts a legend in which Taira no Koremochi, while hunting in the mountains north of Kyoto, encounters a princess and her servants, and stops to enjoy a picnic and some sake with the group of beautiful women. Eventually he drifts off to sleep... but in his dream, the God of War hands him a sword and warns him that the princess is actually the demon Kijo in disguise. This print shows Koremochi in the moment before he slays the demon: as he awakens, he stares down at the cup of sake before him, which reflects the face of the demon -- the princess' true form. He places his hand on the hilt of his sword, about to strike.
